Vacation and Office Hours

July 29, 2009

I will be vacationing with my family in the Mountains the week of August 3rd through August 8th.  I expect to do a great deal of fishing, hiking, eating, swimming, and thriving in the fresh mountain air.  I will be out of cellphone and WiFi range.

The office will still be open!  If you need an adjustment or you are keeping your adjustment schedule Dr. Mike will be available.  If you have a physical therapy, massage therapy, or a nutritional  appointment or consult keep them.  Luiza, Felecia, and Joanne will all be available.

I will be back in the office early Monday August 10th at 8:30 am.

I will be reenergized and ready to turn your power on.  You all make me tic!

Benefits of Custom-Made Flexible Orthotics

July 15, 2009

As a runner, and as a Chiropractor, I have become acutely aware of how important the health of your feet are.  This is no more evident for those of you who have had pain in one or both of your feet.  Three years ago, I began wearing custom-made flexible orthotics after having my feet and posture analyzed at a Chiropractic conference.  The information that I gathered from the digital/thermal scan impressed me enough to purchase the orthotics. I now have the technology to digitally scan patient’s feet in my office as well as the ability to generate a specific Report of Finding for each prospective patient.  After ordering nearly 50 pairs for my patients and I even more impressed then before.  Recent improvements to the orthotics are improved cushioning in the heal and a new energy system using magnets.

The following is a summary of an article written by Dr. Mark Charette describing thirteen ways orthotics can help you in your overall health, and of course, in your running endeavors.

  1. Support for each foot’s three arch structure while standing or in motion
  2. Help to restore balance to your overall body leading to the alleviation of many pains and other physical complaints
  3. Dramatically decrease heel strike shock during daily activity as well as during active times.
  4. Reduces biomechanical aches and pains and improves your natural gait cycle by improving the three functions of the foot: support, locomotion, and shock absorption.
  5. Counteracts leg-length inequality.
  6. Helps adapt to lifestyle changes such as pregnancy, increase or decrease in weight, and increased exercise.
  7. Improves biomechanics of knee by reducing q-angle which is caused by over pronation, allowing the knee is stretch and rotate properly.
  8. By addressing all the above factors body alignment improves.
  9. With better body alignment and a decrease in pain you are able to concentrate on achieving correct stance and posture.
  10.    Preventive measures from complications from conditions that effect the feet like diabetes.
  11. Increases athletic performance by influencing pelvic rotation, stride length, reducing fatigue, and improving balance.
  12.  Put spring in each step with orthotics that offer propulsive materials in the forefoot area.
  13.  Increased satisfaction with your Chiropractic care.

In addition, if you have over a 25 degree foot flare you will run 1/2 mile longer in a 26 mile marathon.

From personal experience, I can attest to the benefits of custom made flexible orthotics in combination with specific Chiropractic care.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call.

The Sun, Lotion, and Vit. D

July 7, 2009

Hello and welcome once again to my blog!

In recent years,  as a society, we are increasingly being told how dangerous the sun is, we should get very little exposure to the sun, and if we do we are sure to get some sort of skin cancer.  (Please be aware that I am not taking this cancer mention lightly as my aunt died of melanoma and my mother of colon cancer)

I do not agree with this.  We as humans should get plenty of sun exposure, we should never get burned.  Did you know that statistics  clearly show that cancer rates are lower near the equator where the sun strength is greatest and higher the farther you move away from the equator!

The primary reason why proper sun exposure is so important is that our bodies produce Vit. D naturally and to the exact proper amounts with as little as 20 minutes of full body sun exposure.  We know now that the hormone Vit. D up-regulates over 200 genes in our body and this number increases every day.  Low Vit. D levels have implications in lower immunity, cancer, infections, lack of thriving, increased inflammation, etc…  I will talk further on Vit.D in another blog.

Sunscreen comes in two different forms; 1. sun blockers or deflectors and 2. chemical absorbers.

The chemical absorbers use potentially harmful chemicals to absorb the suns rays (uva and uvb). In my opinion you should stay away from these types.  The sun blockers use titanium and zinc dioxide to literally deflect the suns rays.  These types are far safer and just as effective.

The two brands that I use is from Aubrey Organics and from Mercola Healthy Skin.  They both have a variety of types ranging from 10 SPF up to 50 SPF.  Please check them out, they both are eco-friendly, use recycled materials, are not tested on animals, effective, will not break your wallet, and reduce your exposure to dangerous chemicals.

Thank you and happy sun bathing.
