Did the Spanish Flu of 1918 Save Chiropractic? Read on!

Use the lessons learned to Boost your Immune System today!

Updated Oct. 17th 2014 by Dr. Noah De Koyer

Every once in a while there is a perceived or real public health threat that is used not to empower people to strive for a healthier lifestyle but to create a tremendous amount of fear and control.  The most recent example of this is Ebola on US soil and Enterovirus d68.

Lets take a brief look at the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918.  This pandemic claimed somewhere between 20-100 million lives, a huge mind blowing number. An interesting little known fact is that this pandemic may have saved Chiropractic as a profession and in fact saved several thousand American Lives.

Statistics show that in Iowa 1 out of 15 people under traditional medical care lost their lives, while the rate of lost lives of those under Chiropractic care and other manual therapies was 1 out of every 789 people.  Please read that again.

Here is more stats; “In Davenport Iowa 50 medical doctors treated 4,953 cases, with 274 deaths.  In the same city, 150 Chiropractors including students and faculty of the Palmer School of Chiropractic treated 1,635 cases with only one death.

“National figures show that 1,142 Chiropractors treated 46,394 patients for influenza during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients – one out of every 886.”

I follow the information provided by Dr. Joe Mercola on nearly all health issues and topics.  To summarize his thoughts on how to protect yourself from the flu

1. Avoid Sugar   2. Get Enought Rest.   3.  Eat Garlic regularly and frequently

4. Exercise   5. Reduce your stress levels   6.  Wash your hands regularly

7. Maximize your Vit. D Levels 8. Probiotics / consume fermented foods

Along with Dr. Joe Mercola’s recommendations I want to add subluxation based – wellness – Chiropractic.

By reading the information provided regarding the outstanding results Chiropractors had with helping and keeping people alive during the Spanish Flu Outbreak of 1918 you get a sense of how powerful the power of Chiropractic is.

How is it that for one person a Chiropractic adjustment could mean mo more back pain, another no more headaches, another better more restful sleep, and yet another a more comfortable easy pregnancy?

The answer is that Chiropractic maximizes the way your body functions by maximizing the function of your nervous system.  Your nervous system controls and coordinates all systems of your body.  Chiropractic is the only profession that specializes in maintaining the integrity of your spine and nervous system.  A Chiropractic adjustment for a new born, toddler, young athlete, mature adult, and/or senior is the single most important health gift you can give. Please pass this information on.

How to Avoid “Snow Shovel Back”

December 11, 2013

We commonly see a condition called “Snow Shovel Back” routinely after the season’s first snow fall resulting in pain and disability. This condition commonly occurs shortly after someone has shoveled snow, usually in the morning hours. Within hours, the back muscles tighten to the point where the individual cannot stand up straight and typically has a lean to the side. This condition can last for days or weeks depending on the individuals lifestyle.

This common condition is not actually a back condition but something I call a lifestyle condition. The following are some of the “lifestyle symptoms” that accompany this condition.

1. Sedentary occupation requiring 6-8hrs/day sitting

2. Driving greater than 30 min. to and from work daily

3. Waist greater than 36″ for men and 30″ for women

4. Exercise less than 2x per month

5. Consumes Non – Grass Fed Red Meat greater than 2X per week

6. High grain diet

7. Smoker

These criteria represent the typical American lifestyle and result in chronic inflammation and deconditioning of the muscles that support the back. The human back was designed to be able to bend forward and extend back up without “going-out” however with the accompanying lifestyle; the muscles cannot handle the demand. There are a few exceptions to these “symptoms” such as prior disc injury, degenerative disease of the spine, and instability conditions but these are rare. The real problem is our current lifestyle.

I recommend the following to avoid “Snow Shovel Back”

1. Not sitting longer than 30 minutes without standing and moving around for a few minutes. Sitting on a stability ball for a portion of your day to engage your core muscle while you sit is a great idea.

2. Drinking 10oz. of water before you shovel the snow. This will hydrate your vertebral discs and your muscles.

3. Regular daily exercise consisting of stretching and resistive strength training for 45 min.

4. Reducing grain fed red meat consumption to less than 1X per week and substitute with grass fed red meat, fish, vegetables, and salads.

5. Limit alcohol consumption to 2-3 drinks per week and stop smoking

6. Always lifting with proper technique of keeping the back straight and bending from the knees. Using an ergonomic shovel can also help.

7. Visit your Chiropractor.

These tips will help you enjoy the winter months and keep someone from carrying you into my office. They will also reduce the amount of inflammation your body has which will reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and arthritis. We are taking the show on the road……. Paleo Presentation at Crossfit Bayonne / Testimonial!

What's Paleo All About?

October 17th – 8:00PM – Crossfit Bayonne – 432 Broadway Bayonne

Check out this new Paleo Testimonial I just got today

My name is *****, I’m 38 and I’m three months in to my paleo lifestyle. In a very short amount of time I have become very passionate about this program and have seen so many wonderful effects of the discipline.

My fiancé and I moved to ****, ** from *** in March of 2012. Over the course of our first year here, I trained for and ran 6 half marathons. I biked, hiked, and walked regularly. I also gained 15 pounds and can’t remember a time when I felt physically worse.  I was exhausted, lethargic, bloated, not sleeping well (the list goes on). Things just weren’t adding up. I tried everything I could think of, nothing worked. And maybe the worst part, for the 1st time in my life exercise was not enjoyable because I felt weighed down and largely unmotivated. I was pretty sure it was due to my diet (which I didn’t think was that bad).

Then came Paleo. In 3 months I’ve lost 15 pounds (10 in the first 30 days) without even trying. I’m sleeping thru the night for the first time in about 6 years, my workouts are amazing and efficient, my cravings for sweets (which were severe) are all but gone and I feel better than I can ever remember. My body is also more lean and fit. I had no idea how poorly I was eating and how much processed junk I was putting in my system. I was uneducated around what was actually good for me as I subscribed to the low fat/low cal way of eating and because of that, was pumping my body full of processed junk. It was a huge departure from what I was used to. But the fact is it worked. Perhaps the most amazing part of my experience is I’ve gone off the Lexapro I’ve been on for the past 2 years to treat anxiety. The benefits of this have not been just physical, as I find myself feeling more confident and clear headed. It’s a difficult thing to articulate but I feel in control and sure of what I’m doing. That has far exceeded my expectations around this program. Put simply, I feel good. Really good.

I would highly recommend reading as much as you can find on the subject. It’s satisfying and with the right material is actually fun. The recipes are endless and I learned a whole new way of cooking. One that is far easier than I’m use to. I look at food completely different and am eating far less and going much further on what I put into my system. Don’t get me wrong, there are times when I’ll cheat but I do my best to stick with it most of the time because the results are impossible to dispute. So much so, that I don’t see myself going off this anytime soon. If ever.

One very important detail for me to note is none of this was possible without the guidance and support from Dr. Noah. He recommends an amazing variety of books and subject matter that made this easy and enjoyable. Big shout out to him. Anyone who is thinking about going Paleo, DO IT!! It’s one of best decisions I’ve made for my health. You will not be sorry!!

Paleo Pack – 30 Day Supplement Program

June 17, 2013

We all need nutritional support on some level.  Depending on your genetics, how well your digestive system works, and the quality of your food choices will determine what kinds of supplements are best for you.  It is our belief that if you are eating a Paleo Template Diet with appropriate sun exposure your need for these products should be minimal. Especially if you are consuming organ meats, bone broth, and a wide compliment of fresh vegetables.   However, there are a few supplements that we feel are necessary even in the best of diets and this is why we designed the Paleo Pack.

So you may be wondering what is in the Paleo Pack. Each packet includes 6 capsules and 2 softgels.  2 capsules (2,000 ius) of Vit. D3, 2 capsules (300 mg) of Magnesium bisglycinate chelate, 2 softgels (2,000 mg) of Marine Fish Oil Concentrate including 10 ius of Vit. E, and 2 capsules of a Probiotic Blend supplying 6 billion cfus of beneficial bacteria.

paleo pack 2

Why Vit. D3 – first and foremost many people are deficient – Vit. D3 has roles in calcium metabolism, bone health, and many other physiologic processes – Vit. D receptors are found in the colon, prostate, breast, ovary, and  many other tissues, it is anti-inflammatory, boosts immune function, and up regulates many many genes.

Why Magnesium Chelate – it is a cofactor in more than 300 enzymes, extremely important for cardiac function, energy metabolism, neurochemical transmission, and bone formation.  The chelate form is absorbed and utilized much easier than other forms such as carbonate or sulfate.  Other than cacao and a few other foods magnesium is difficult to get from food alone.

Why Marine Fish Oil – high potency DHA and EPA will  help your body reduce inflammation and to feed your brain and nervous system with the fats it needs to function at high levels.  Omega 3s support many physiological processes related to immune function, lipoprotein metabolism, brain function, and mood regulation. A small amount of natural Vit. E is added to  maintain freshness and retard lipid peroxidation.

Why Probioitics – 6 billion plus cfus of bifidobacter and lactobacillus to help reestablish your healthy balance beneficial bacteria, boost your immune system, and improve your gut health and digestion. Microencapsulation is used to help protect the microorganisms from destruction by stomach acid to ensure there viability and improve shelf life.

2. I came across the Family Chiropractic Center of Bayonne through a desperate Google search trying to deal with my back pain. What I found was a group of people who care about the health and happiness of my family. Outside of helping me with my back pain and teaching me the importance of chiropractic care, Dr. Noah has become a partner in my path to wellness. When I got to my wits end with my back pain I was also fed up with my digestive health, it just so happened that Dr. Noah was on the same journey. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about making everyone that walks into the practice healthier than they were before. At 30 I feel happier and healthier than ever have and I can attribute a lot of that to Dr. Noah. I trust his advice and appreciate all that he has done for me and my family.

3. Two and a half months ago I was 265 lbs taking blood pressure and cholesterol medication, suffering from lung disease that prevented me from walking up a flight of stairs without losing my breath let alone working out to get in shape.  My seasonal allergies were killing me.  Then I visited Dr. Noah and he told me about The Paleo Diet.  I read the books and it seemed to make sense to me.  In the ensuing months I have lost 28 pounds, been taken off blood pressure and cholesterol medications due to my great blood work and I am jogging again, my allergies are all but gone.  In general for the first time in years I can say I feel great.  To say Paleo and Dr. Noah have changed my life is an understatement.

Gluten and Casein Free Irish Soda Bread Recipe

March 11, 2013

Found this recipe online and thought I would share this with you all.  It is not Paleo but it is Gluten and Casein Free.  I intend to make this bread on Thursday and will blog again about how it came out.  I had to find a recipe that worked as I loved my mothers Irish Soda Bread.  I hope this one works!

Gluten-Free and Dairy Free Irish Soda Bread is adapted from a recipe by Connie Sarros, “Leprechaun Bread” which appears in her cookbook, Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free, Reduced-Calorie Cookbook. This recipe makes a light, classic loaf of Irish Soda Bread with terrific flavor and texture.

If you tolerate dairy foods and can find it, serve Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread with Kerry Gold butter- the rich, deep yellow, super creamy butter from Ireland.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 55 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups gluten-free all purpose flour mix ( I used Bob’s Red Mill Pizza Crust Mix with great results)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon gluten-free baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon honey OR 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cold dairy-free butter substitute, cut in small pieces (see note)
  • 1/2 cup currants OR raisins
  • 2 large, lightly beaten eggs
  • 1 cup minus 1 tablespoon light, canned coconut milk (see note)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon gluten-free mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • Extra gluten-free flour to shape dough
  • Extra coconut milk to brush on loaf before baking
  • Note: If you include dairy foods in your diet, use unsalted butter instead of dairy-free butter substitute and substitute buttermilk for the coconut milk. If using buttermilk, reduce the amount of apple cider vinegar from 1 tablespoon to 1 teaspoon.

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 375° F / 190° C

Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease.

Note: The key to preventing stickiness while shaping the bread loaf is to liberally flour a large cutting board (work surface) with gluten-free flour mix or white rice flour. Keep hands and loaf lightly floured while shaping!

  1. Sift all dry ingredients EXCEPT baking soda. Pour into a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Use hands to work cold butter substitute into flour mixture. Add currants.
  3. Add cider vinegar to coconut milk and pour into dry ingredients. Mix with an electric mixer to thoroughly blend.
  4. Add mayonnaise and lightly beaten eggs and mix just until combined. Add baking soda and mix to combine.
  5. Turn the thick, sticky batter onto a floured cutting board and shape the loaf into a round ball, about 6 inches in diameter.
  6. Use a sharp knife to cut an “X” on the top of loaf.
  7. Brush with coconut milk and allow to rest for 10 minutes. Brush with coconut milk again.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 45 minutes or until the loaf is golden and done.
  9. Serve warm

Serves 6
