How to Avoid “Snow Shovel Back”

December 11, 2013

We commonly see a condition called “Snow Shovel Back” routinely after the season’s first snow fall resulting in pain and disability. This condition commonly occurs shortly after someone has shoveled snow, usually in the morning hours. Within hours, the back muscles tighten to the point where the individual cannot stand up straight and typically has a lean to the side. This condition can last for days or weeks depending on the individuals lifestyle.

This common condition is not actually a back condition but something I call a lifestyle condition. The following are some of the “lifestyle symptoms” that accompany this condition.

1. Sedentary occupation requiring 6-8hrs/day sitting

2. Driving greater than 30 min. to and from work daily

3. Waist greater than 36″ for men and 30″ for women

4. Exercise less than 2x per month

5. Consumes Non – Grass Fed Red Meat greater than 2X per week

6. High grain diet

7. Smoker

These criteria represent the typical American lifestyle and result in chronic inflammation and deconditioning of the muscles that support the back. The human back was designed to be able to bend forward and extend back up without “going-out” however with the accompanying lifestyle; the muscles cannot handle the demand. There are a few exceptions to these “symptoms” such as prior disc injury, degenerative disease of the spine, and instability conditions but these are rare. The real problem is our current lifestyle.

I recommend the following to avoid “Snow Shovel Back”

1. Not sitting longer than 30 minutes without standing and moving around for a few minutes. Sitting on a stability ball for a portion of your day to engage your core muscle while you sit is a great idea.

2. Drinking 10oz. of water before you shovel the snow. This will hydrate your vertebral discs and your muscles.

3. Regular daily exercise consisting of stretching and resistive strength training for 45 min.

4. Reducing grain fed red meat consumption to less than 1X per week and substitute with grass fed red meat, fish, vegetables, and salads.

5. Limit alcohol consumption to 2-3 drinks per week and stop smoking

6. Always lifting with proper technique of keeping the back straight and bending from the knees. Using an ergonomic shovel can also help.

7. Visit your Chiropractor.

These tips will help you enjoy the winter months and keep someone from carrying you into my office. They will also reduce the amount of inflammation your body has which will reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and arthritis. Dr. Noah’s Gluten Free / Casein Free Pumpkin Pie Recipe – Happy Thanksgiving!

November 19, 2013

Dr. Noah’s Gluten Free / Casein Free Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Pumpkin Pie Filling

  • 15 ounces canned pumpkin / 1 can  (trader joes or just use the classic Libby’s)
  • 3/4 cup palm / coconut sugar (any sugar will work)
  • 2 ½ tsp. pumpkin pie spice
  • 3 eggs beaten
  • 1 cup coconut milk (I used the canned type)
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine pumpkin, sugar, and pumpkin spice. Stir in eggs. Gradually add coconut milk. Stir ingredients until creamy and smooth.
  3. Pour pumpkin mixture into the *unbaked pie crust. Bake in the middle rack in the center of the oven for about 1 hour (or until knife inserted in the center comes out clean.) Cool for an hour on top of the stove then put in the fridge to chill.

*Full disclosure it is simply just to annoying for me to make my own pie crust – Wholefoods has a great gluten free / dairy free unbaked frozen pie crust that works great in this recipe and is perfect if you like quiches as well!

**I recommend using all organic ingredients if possible!

We are taking the show on the road……. Paleo Presentation at Crossfit Bayonne / Testimonial!

What's Paleo All About?

October 17th – 8:00PM – Crossfit Bayonne – 432 Broadway Bayonne

Check out this new Paleo Testimonial I just got today

My name is *****, I’m 38 and I’m three months in to my paleo lifestyle. In a very short amount of time I have become very passionate about this program and have seen so many wonderful effects of the discipline.

My fiancé and I moved to ****, ** from *** in March of 2012. Over the course of our first year here, I trained for and ran 6 half marathons. I biked, hiked, and walked regularly. I also gained 15 pounds and can’t remember a time when I felt physically worse.  I was exhausted, lethargic, bloated, not sleeping well (the list goes on). Things just weren’t adding up. I tried everything I could think of, nothing worked. And maybe the worst part, for the 1st time in my life exercise was not enjoyable because I felt weighed down and largely unmotivated. I was pretty sure it was due to my diet (which I didn’t think was that bad).

Then came Paleo. In 3 months I’ve lost 15 pounds (10 in the first 30 days) without even trying. I’m sleeping thru the night for the first time in about 6 years, my workouts are amazing and efficient, my cravings for sweets (which were severe) are all but gone and I feel better than I can ever remember. My body is also more lean and fit. I had no idea how poorly I was eating and how much processed junk I was putting in my system. I was uneducated around what was actually good for me as I subscribed to the low fat/low cal way of eating and because of that, was pumping my body full of processed junk. It was a huge departure from what I was used to. But the fact is it worked. Perhaps the most amazing part of my experience is I’ve gone off the Lexapro I’ve been on for the past 2 years to treat anxiety. The benefits of this have not been just physical, as I find myself feeling more confident and clear headed. It’s a difficult thing to articulate but I feel in control and sure of what I’m doing. That has far exceeded my expectations around this program. Put simply, I feel good. Really good.

I would highly recommend reading as much as you can find on the subject. It’s satisfying and with the right material is actually fun. The recipes are endless and I learned a whole new way of cooking. One that is far easier than I’m use to. I look at food completely different and am eating far less and going much further on what I put into my system. Don’t get me wrong, there are times when I’ll cheat but I do my best to stick with it most of the time because the results are impossible to dispute. So much so, that I don’t see myself going off this anytime soon. If ever.

One very important detail for me to note is none of this was possible without the guidance and support from Dr. Noah. He recommends an amazing variety of books and subject matter that made this easy and enjoyable. Big shout out to him. Anyone who is thinking about going Paleo, DO IT!! It’s one of best decisions I’ve made for my health. You will not be sorry!!

IS THE FLU SHOT WORTH IT?

September 9, 2013

Is the Flu Shot Worth it?

  1. Flu vaccines, according to the best scientific evidence available today, will only work against 10% of the circulating viruses that cause the symptoms of seasonal epidemic influenza. Additionally, flu vaccines have been found to elicit inflammatory reactions that may harm the human heart, the developing fetus, and the fragile immune systems of our infants. So, do the theoretical benefits really outweigh the known harms?
  2. The reality is that vaccines not only do not work as advertised, but they represent a significant health threat, likely on the same order of magnitude as influenza itself, due to their well-known role in compromising immunological self-tolerance (autoimmunity), as well as by eliciting a wide range of adverse health effects associated with the use of adjuvants, preservatives, foreign animal DNA and cell byproducts, adventitious viruses, and other so-called “inactive ingredients,” including even the unnatural route and method of antigen administration itself.[i]
  3. Over 200 viruses cause influenza and influenza-like illness which produce the same symptoms (fever, headache, aches and pains, cough and runny noses). Without laboratory tests, doctors cannot tell the two illnesses apart. Both last for days and rarely lead to death or serious illness. At best, vaccines might be effective against only Influenza A and B, which represent about 10% of all circulating viruses.” (Source: Cochrane Summaries).

Flu Vaccines Found To Increase Heart Attack Risk

A concerning study published in 2011 in the International Journal of Medicine revealed a fact rarely addressed by conventional health authorities, or the mostly uncritical mainstream media, namely: flu vaccines result in inflammatory cardiovascular changes indicative of increased risk for serious heart-related events such as heart attack.[ii]

CHIROPRACTIC AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH

September 7, 2013

Chiropractic and Emotional Health

Chiropractors work with the nervous system. Therefore, the scope of Chiropractic goes far beyond just neck and back pain. Although many Chiropractors and those they serve tend to focus on disorders associated with the physical body, it is obvious that abnormal nervous system function may also affect emotional and psychological health.

As a matter of historical importance, several inpatient mental health facilities were established, where chiropractic adjustments were the dominant clinical service provided. Two of these were located in Davenport. In 1922, the Chiropractic Psychopathic Sanitarium was established. The facility was later known as Forest Park Sanitarium. North Dakota Judge A. W. Ponath noted that at the North Dakota state mental hospital, the “cure and discharge rate” ranged from 18-27%, compared to 65% at Forest Park. [1]

The second facility, Clear View Sanitarium, was established in 1926. In 1951, Clear View was acquired by the Palmer School of Chiropractic. Dr. W. Heath Quigley, who directed the sanitarium, described the clinical protocol: “Each day, each patient was examined. If the clinician interpreted their diagnostic analysis to indicate nerve impingement, the patient was adjusted.” Quigley reported that the rooms were “sunny and bright,” and that meals included “large servings of fresh vegetables…from a garden.” Unfortunately, both institutions closed (Forest Park in 1959 and Clear View in 1961) in large measure because of third party pay issues. Insurance companies often refused to pay the costs of care.

The 1970s saw a renewed interest in chiropractic care and mental health issues. In 1973, Dr. Herman S. Schwartz, a chiropractor, published a book titled “Mental Health and Chiropractic: A Multidisciplinary Approach.” [2] In 1949, Dr. Schwartz had published a preliminary report of 350 patients afflicted with a “nervous or mental disorder” and reported that the majority of them showed improvement under Chiropractic care.

Interest in this field continues. Several authors have reviewed the role of chiropractic care in children with learning and behavioral impairments. [3] Blanks, Schuster and Dobson [4] published the results of a retrospective assessment of subluxation based chiropractic care on self related health, wellness and quality of life. After surveying 2,818 respondents in 156 chiropractic practices, a strong connection was found between persons receiving Chiropractic care and self reported improvement in health, wellness and quality of life.

Remember, everything we experience is processed through our nervous system. When our perception of the world is distorted by nerve interference, it compromises our ability and capacity to respond appropriately to stress. In addition to damaging our physical health, it could result in impaired psychological and emotional function as well. When this happens to a significant number of people in a society, a sick society results! The developer of chiropractic (Dr. B.J. Palmer) stated in his writings that by getting to the cause of the brain imbalance (the nerve interference) and adjusting the subluxation, it is possible to return that brain to its normal capacity and capability.”

A thank you must go out to Dr. Dan Yachter and Elevation Health for putting this information together.

Did the Spanish Flu of 1918 Save Chiropractic? Read on!

Did the Spanish Flu of 1918 Save Chiropractic? Read on!

Updated Sept. 06th 2013 by Dr. Noah De Koyer

Every once in a while there is a perceived public health threat that is used not to empower people but to cause a tremendous amount of fear and control.  The most recent example of this is the Swine Flu in 2010..  It has now transcended into 2013, with the powers that be deciding  to combine the swine flu vaccine and the “normal” flu vaccine into one shot and “updating it this year”. The last bout of the Swine Flu happened in this country in 1976 and after the mass hysteria many people died and hundreds were permanently damaged and paralyzed from the very vaccine that was created to protect people.  It appears that we have not learned anything from the past and seem to be heading down the same road.  In the year 2010,  Australia banned the flu vaccine for children under 5 because of narcolepsy and fevers and Finland is about to do the same.   Please understand, I am not anti-medical establishment.  I am for empowering people to make sound choices based on fact and truth not conjecture and fear. Stand up and be the chess player not the chess piece.

Lets take a brief look at the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918.  This pandemic claimed somewhere between 20-100 million lives, a huge mind blowing number. An interesting little known fact is that this pandemic may have saved Chiropractic as a profession and in fact saved several thousand American Lives.

Statistics show that in Iowa 1 out of 15 people under traditional medical care lost their lives, while the rate of lost lives of those under Chiropractic care and other manual therapies was 1 out of every 789 people.  Please read that again.

Here is more stats; “In Davenport Iowa 50 medical doctors treated 4,953 cases, with 274 deaths.  In the same city, 150 Chiropractors including students and faculty of the Palmer School of Chiropractic treated 1,635 cases with only one death.

“National figures show that 1,142 Chiropractors treated 46,394 patients for influenza during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients – one out of every 886.”

I follow the information provided by Dr. Joe Mercola on nearly all health issues and topics.  To summarize his thoughts on how to protect yourself from the winter flu or swine flu for that matter is as follows;

1. Avoid Sugar   2. Get Enought Rest.   3.  Eat Garlic regularly and frequently

4. Exercise   5. Reduce your stress levels   6.  Wash your hands regularly

7. Maximize your Vit. D Levels

Read more at –http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2003/10/29/flu-shot-part-three.aspx

Along with Dr. Joe Mercola’s recommendations I want to add subluxation based – wellness – Chiropractic.

By reading the information provided regarding the outstanding results Chiropractors had with helping and keeping people alive during the Spanish Flu Outbreak of 1918 you get a sense of how powerful what we do truly is.

How is it that for one person a Chiropractic adjustment could mean mo more back pain, another no more headaches, another better more restful sleep, and yet another a more comfortable easy pregnancy?

The answer is that Chiropractic maximizes the way your body functions by maximizing the function of your nervous system.  Your nervous system controls and coordinates all systems of your body.  Chiropractic is the only profession that specializes in maintaining the integrity of your spine and nervous system.  A Chiropractic adjustment for a new born, toddler, young athlete, mature adult, and/or senior is the single most important health gift you can give. Please pass this information on.

Yours in Chiropractic, Wellness, and Longevity;

Dr. Noah
