Did the Spanish Flu of 1918 Save Chiropractic? Read on!

Use the lessons learned to Boost your Immune System today!

Updated Oct. 17th 2014 by Dr. Noah De Koyer

Every once in a while there is a perceived or real public health threat that is used not to empower people to strive for a healthier lifestyle but to create a tremendous amount of fear and control.  The most recent example of this is Ebola on US soil and Enterovirus d68.

Lets take a brief look at the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918.  This pandemic claimed somewhere between 20-100 million lives, a huge mind blowing number. An interesting little known fact is that this pandemic may have saved Chiropractic as a profession and in fact saved several thousand American Lives.

Statistics show that in Iowa 1 out of 15 people under traditional medical care lost their lives, while the rate of lost lives of those under Chiropractic care and other manual therapies was 1 out of every 789 people.  Please read that again.

Here is more stats; “In Davenport Iowa 50 medical doctors treated 4,953 cases, with 274 deaths.  In the same city, 150 Chiropractors including students and faculty of the Palmer School of Chiropractic treated 1,635 cases with only one death.

“National figures show that 1,142 Chiropractors treated 46,394 patients for influenza during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients – one out of every 886.”

I follow the information provided by Dr. Joe Mercola on nearly all health issues and topics.  To summarize his thoughts on how to protect yourself from the flu

1. Avoid Sugar   2. Get Enought Rest.   3.  Eat Garlic regularly and frequently

4. Exercise   5. Reduce your stress levels   6.  Wash your hands regularly

7. Maximize your Vit. D Levels 8. Probiotics / consume fermented foods

Along with Dr. Joe Mercola’s recommendations I want to add subluxation based – wellness – Chiropractic.

By reading the information provided regarding the outstanding results Chiropractors had with helping and keeping people alive during the Spanish Flu Outbreak of 1918 you get a sense of how powerful the power of Chiropractic is.

How is it that for one person a Chiropractic adjustment could mean mo more back pain, another no more headaches, another better more restful sleep, and yet another a more comfortable easy pregnancy?

The answer is that Chiropractic maximizes the way your body functions by maximizing the function of your nervous system.  Your nervous system controls and coordinates all systems of your body.  Chiropractic is the only profession that specializes in maintaining the integrity of your spine and nervous system.  A Chiropractic adjustment for a new born, toddler, young athlete, mature adult, and/or senior is the single most important health gift you can give. Please pass this information on.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Pregnancy Risk from the Vitamin D Council

December 13, 2012

Vitamin D deficiency and pregnancy risks
December 13, 2012 — John Cannell, MD
Professors Carole Wagner and Bruce Hollis and ten of their colleagues at the Medical University of South Carolina recently conducted the largest randomized controlled trial to date using meaningful daily doses (2,000 vs. 4,000 IU) of vitamin D during pregnancy.

Wagner CL, McNeil R, Hamilton SA, Winkler J, Cook CR, Warner G, Bivens B, Davis DJ, Smith PG, Murphy M, Shary J, Hollis BW. A Randomized Trial of Vitamin D Supplementation in Two Community Health Center Networks in South Carolina. Am J Obstet Gynecol. 2012 Nov 3.

The ethics committee would not let them use a control group of 400 IU/day, as the committee felt this would endanger the women and their newborns. Sadly, most women in this country only take the 400 IU/day in their prenatal vitamin.

The researchers randomized 256 pregnant women, 160 of whom completed the study. They were separated into two groups, 2,000 or 4,000 IU per day, beginning at 3-4 months of pregnancy. They followed the 160 women through delivery and found the following:

  1. At the beginning of the study, pregnant African American women had a level of 18.5 ng/ml, while Whites had notably higher mean values of 29.5 ng/ml.
  2. Neither group had any side effects; in fact the blood calcium levels of the 4,000 IU group actually went down.
  3. At delivery, the average cord blood vitamin D level was 22 ng/ml in the 2,000 IU/day group and 27 ng/ml in the 4,000 IU/day group, still slightly less than cord levels of hunter gatherers.
  4. Overall, only 37% of the 2,000 IU group and 46% of the 4,000 IU group achieved vitamin D levels of 40 ng/ml by the end of their pregnancies. Furthermore, 40 ng/ml was the threshold level at which conversion of 25(OH)D to activated vitamin D finally flattened out during pregnancy. In other words, the more 25(OH)D the pregnant woman had, the higher the activated vitamin D level, until a 25(OH)D level of 40 ng/ml was reached, and activated vitamin D stopped increasing any more at higher levels.
  5. The 4,000 IU group participants had 2.40 times higher odds of having an infant in the 50th percentile of birth weight, compared to the 2,000 IU group. That is, the 4,000 IU group was more likely to have normal weight babies.
  6. Lower pre‐delivery 25(OH)D was significantly predictive of preterm delivery (p=0.001)
  7. Lower pre‐delivery 25(OH)D was associated with more infection (p=0.026).
  8. Overall, complications of pregnancy were less with the 4,000 IU/day group than with the 2,000 IU/day group, though not statistically significant.

In my opinion, this is once again great research that shows that pregnant women should have levels over 40 ng/ml, and I think it’s preferable to target levels between 50-60 ng/ml.

This is why the Council recommends 6,000 IU/day, to ensure these kinds of levels. We also recommend checking 25(OH)D levels periodically throughout pregnancy to make sure your 25(OH)D levels remain in the natural range, about 50-60 ng/ml. Some women may need more than 6,000 IU/day.

12 Myths The Are Destroying Your Health – What Are They? What You Can Do About It!

The Vitamin D2 Supplement Your Medical Doctor is Prescribing Raises Your Death Rate by 2%!

December 2, 2011

The Vitamin D2 Supplement Your Medical Doctor is Prescribing Raises Your Death Rate by 2%!

Story at-a-glance straight from www.mercola.com

  •  A meta-analysis of 50 trials looking at mortality rates for “doctor recommended” synthetic vitamin D2 supplements versus natural vitamin D3 shows a six percent risk reduction among those who used D3, compared to a two percent increased risk among those who used D2
  • Research shows vitamin D3 is approximately 87 percent more potent in raising and maintaining vitamin D concentrations and produces 2- to 3-fold greater storage of vitamin D than does D2. D3 is also converted into its active form 500 percent faster
  • Optimizing your vitamin D levels may be one of the most important steps you can take in support of your long-term health. The ideal way to do this is by exposing large amounts of skin to sunlight or a safe tanning bed, but if you need to use an oral supplement, make sure you’re taking vitamin D3
  • The most important factor is your vitamin D serum level, which should ideally be between 50-70 ng/ml. When taking an oral vitamin D supplement, you should take enough to reach and maintain this therapeutic level. As a generic guideline, adults need to take about 8,000 IU’s a day to reach this level

Dr. Noah’s summary

In a meta- analysis of a total of 94,000 participants showed that people who used Vitamin D3 had a 6% risk reduction in death while  people who used Vitamin D2 (Drisdol) had a 2% increase in mortality!

So why do Medical Doctors still prescribe this form of Vit. D that increases your risk of death! There are two reasons; 1. They are puppets to the Pharmaceutical Companies and 2. They are unfortunately unconsciously incompetent.

For the past 3 years in every lecture that I have done I have disparaged this form of Vit. D! The form you want to take is Vit. D3 (cholecalciferol) and the form you want to stay away from is Vit. D2 (ergocalciferol).

My family’s intake of Vit. D3 is; Wife – approximately 3,500ius a day, my children – approximately 1,000ius a day, and I take approximately 5,000ius a day!

It is my belief that these levels are very very safe and likely too little! I highly suggest that you get your Vit. D3 levels tested each and every time you get your blood work tested at your primary! If you want to do your own testing or simply just don’t see your primary that often go to http://www.vitamindcouncil.org and this site will list how you can do this in addition to countless research articles on the benefits of Vit. D!

We carry three forms of Vit. D3 at the office all from Anabolic Labs;  Mega D 1,000, Clinical D 5,000, and Vit. D3K2 2,000 (my favorite because of the addition of K2 a critical bone health and anticancer nutrient).

Please keep in mind the best way to get Vit. D is from the sun, the second best is a safe tanning bed, and the third is from supplementation.  For more information about this check out www.mercola.com .

With the risk of ranting and raving if you have any questions never hesitate to respond to this blog!

Top Ten Facts About Vit. D3 and Cancer From the Vitamin D Council!

September 8, 2011

Top ten facts about vitamin D and cancer (presented in the summaries):

  1. Many studies have found solar ultraviolet-B (UVB) and vitamin D associated with reduced risk of breast, colon, and rectal cancer.
  2. A randomized controlled trial with 1100 IU/day vitamin D3 plus 1450 mg/day calcium found a 77% reduction in all-cancer incidence.
  3. Geographical studies have found reduced risk in mortality rates for 20 types of cancer in regions of higher solar UVB doses.
  4. Observational studies have found that the risk of breast, colon, and rectal cancer fall as vitamin D blood levels rise at least up to 40 ng/mL (100 nmol/L).
  5. Mechanisms have been proposed to explain how vitamin D acts to reduce the risk of cancer from starting, growing, and spreading.
  6. Those who develop nonmelanoma skin cancer may have produced enough vitamin D to reduce their risk of internal cancers.
  7. Those with higher vitamin D blood levels at time of cancer diagnosis had nearly twice the survival rate of those with the lowest levels.
  8. African-Americans have an increased risk of cancer in part due to lower vitamin D blood levels because of darker skin.
  9. Higher UVB exposure early in life has been found associated with reduced risk of breast and prostate cancer.
  10. Those diagnosed with breast, colon and prostate cancer in summer in Norway had higher survival rates than those diagnosed in winter.

What We Have Learned About Vitamin D Dosing – Thank You Dr. Dan Murphy!

August 31, 2011

What We Have Learned About Vitamin D Dosing?

Integrative Medicine
Vol. 9, No. 1, Feb/Mar 2010
Joseph Pizzorno, ND, Editor in Chief
BACKGROUND FROM DAN MURPHY
The world standard uses nmol/l, while US standard uses mg/dl.
For vitamin D, to convert mg/dl to nmol/l, divide the mg/dl by 2.5.
For vitamin D, to convert nmol/l to mg/dl, just multiply by 2.5.
KEY POINTS FROM THIS ARTICLE:
1) “Over the past several years, the surprising prevalence of vitamin D
deficiency has become broadly recognized.”
2) Vitamin D deficiency is linked to:
Osteoporosis
Cardiovascular disease
Cancer
Autoimmune diseases
Multiple sclerosis
Pain
Loss of Cognitive function
Decreased strength
Increased rate of all-cause mortality
3) “Deficiency of vitamin D is now recognized as a pandemic, with more than
half of the world’s population at risk.”
4) Approximately 50% of the healthy North American population and more than
80% of those with chronic diseases are vitamin D deficient.
5) 80% of healthy Caucasian infants are vitamin D deficient. [And the rate of
vitamin D deficiency tends to be greater in African American and Hispanic children].
6) Those with vitamin D deficiency experience 39% higher annual healthcare
costs than those with normal levels of vitamin D.
7) Suggested levels of vitamin D as measured by 25(OH)D3 is:
Caucasians 125 – 175 nmol/l = 50 – 70 mg/dl
Hispanics 100 – 150 nmol/l = 40 – 60 mg/dl
African Americans 80 – 120 nmol/l = 32- 48 mg/dl
2
8) The minimum blood levels of vitamin D [25(OH)D3] is 80 nmol/l (32 mg/dl).
9) Prolonged intake of 10,000 IU of supplemental vitamin D3 “is likely to pose no
risk of adverse effects in almost all individuals.”
10) The maximum safe levels for vitamin 25(OH)D3 in the blood is 275 nmol/l
(100 mg/dl).
11) Sarcoidosis patients (and other granulomatous diseases) should not
supplement with vitamin D because it increases granuloma production increasing
the risk of hypercalcemia.
12) A loading dose of supplemental vitamin D3 of 10,000 IU/day for 3 months
and maintenance dose of 5,000 IU/day “is not enough for most people in northern
climes.”
13) The loading dose of supplemental vitamin D3 should be about 20,000 IU/day
for 3 – 6 months with a maintenance dose of 5,000 IU/day. Those taking this
amount of supplemental vitamin D3 should periodically have their serum 25(OH)D3
levels measured.

Did the Spanish Flu of 1918 Save Chiropractic? Read on!

September 13, 2010 by drnoahdekoyer

Every once in a while there is a perceived public health threat that is used not to empower people but to cause a tremendous amount of fear and control.  The most recent example of this is the Swine Flu.  It has now transcended into 2010, with the powers that be deciding  to combine the swine flu vaccine and the “normal” flu vaccine into one shot. The last bout of the Swine Flu happened in this country in 1976 and after the mass hysteria many people died and hundreds were permanently damaged and paralyzed from the very vaccine that was created to protect people.  It appears that we have not learned anything from the past and seem to be heading down the same road. This year, 2010,  Australia has banned the flu vaccine for children under 5 because of narcolepsy and fevers and Finland is about to do the same.   Please understand, I am not anti-medical establishment.  I am for empowering people to make sound choices based on fact and truth not conjecture and fear. Stand up and be the chess player not the chess piece.

Lets take a brief look at the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918.  This pandemic claimed somewhere between 20-100 million lives, a huge mind blowing number. 7. Maximize your Vit. D Levels
